One question I get asked quite often is how do I have the motivation to keep up with my early morning workouts and fitness routine? I also get told by people that they would never have the motivation or dedication to keep it up. So I thought I would share with you my motivation, what keeps me motivated, some of my tips and hopefully I will inspire some of you to do the same!
The only person stopping you is yourself. Don't let anything stop you, remember that you are the one who is in control of reaching your goals and dreams. Many people think 'I'll start on Monday' or 'I'll start tomorrow' but that day never comes. Stop making excuses and start now! Taking on a new fitness routine or healthy eating can be scary but don't let it stop you. One of my favourite tips is to not think of a new regime as a 'diet' or a 'quick fix' but to make it a lifestyle change.
Remember - we are all a work in progress. No one is perfect, everyone has flaws. Set yourself goals, whether it is getting up and doing 30 minutes of exercise everyday before work or school or just simply to drink more water - set yourself that goal and achieve it! If you make small changes to your routine or diet then that larger goal will soon become a lot closer.
Make the time to workout. We are all busy people - school, work, being a mother, being a friend - our lives are busy and we have lots of commitments but don't forget to put yourself first once in a while! Set aside sometime for yourself to focus on you. I like to set my alarm for 6:50am during the week, get myself up and workout. Not only does morning exercise get your body moving, sweating and burning calories but it allows you time to focus your mind and prepare yourself for the day ahead. I have honestly found that since I started my AM workouts two months ago I am happier, healthier, more toned and most importantly I have more confidence in myself. If you become more confident in yourself you will become an inspiration and positive role model for other people.
Never compare yourself to anyone else, we are all unique. This is something which I have learnt over the years. As a teenager I constantly compared myself to models in magazines, pop stars, film stars and my friends. In my mind I was never good enough, thin enough, fast enough or smart enough when in reality - I was and I am! So don't compare yourself to anyone but you. Have you improved on yourself since yesterday or last week? Success is about what you can achieve so remain focused on that!
The first days of adjusting to a new routine are the hardest. Stick with it, the more you keep up with it the easier it will become. If you aren't used to waking up early, especially on these cold dark mornings heading into winter it can be tough. But I promise you that if you just get up 30 minutes earlier than normal and move you will feel more energised for the rest of the day. You can do whatever you like - run, walk, a workout DVD or my personal favourite Tone It Up routines! There are lots of workout videos and routines available online - you don't have to spend money on a hefty gym membership to be active. Honestly, I have never been a member of a gym in my life! The gym works great for a lot of people but it just isn't for me.
Connect with like minded people. One of the things that has made a huge difference to me is finding people who have the same goals and who believe in a healthy lifestyle like I do. I have found them through twitter and other social media. If you have a friend who can support you in your workouts then do it together! I have also found a few fitness blogs which are amazing so I recommend that you check these lovely and inspirational girls out: Powercakes, For The Love Of Kale and HautePnk.
Remember different things work for different people and these are a few things that work for me. I hope that I have inspired at least one of you to set your alarm for the morning to get up and workout! Don't forget to have fun and keep smiling :)
