Happy Monday people! Today I wanted to write about one element of yoga teaching that is under estimated - learning to hustle. By that I mean working your ass off to market your classes, workshops and retreats. Since completing my yoga teacher training I have traipsed up and down the streets of Bristol placing flyers and postcards in any and every coffee shop and health food shop that will take them! While I am on the subject - why don't the big chain coffee shops have a place for flyers? They should have!
Why do this? Well the best way to market your classes is of course word of month from happy students, however when you are first starting out this can take time. I am not sure how effective my flyers are but it doesn't do any harm in getting them out there! After all, you never know who is going to pick one up.
Now we come to online marketing. Marketing yourself online can be tough when you first start out, find websites where you can advertise your classes for free - such as Gumtree and post your classes. Build your website and make it as amazing as you can. It might be easier to hire someone to do that kinda thing but when you are just starting out every single penny counts so that to me, meant making my own website, networking via social media sites and spreading the word via Facebook. Here is a little fact about the power of the internet - I sold out my first yoga workshop through online marketing only, email newsletters, twitter and Facebook. Of course spreading the word through my classes and encouraging people to sign up for the newsletter played a big part. Being online is such a huge part of todays society so don't under estimate the power than it can have.
You will likely have to approach every gym, studio and club in your area before a teaching position opens up. I highly recommend getting to know your fellow teachers in your area and covering as many classes as possible. Just remember that if a teacher decides to leave then the gym (or indeed the teacher) will prefer to hire someone they already know.
If you are a new teacher just starting out, above all have faith in yourself! I am a believer in the power of a positive mind. The good vibes you send out to the universe you will receive back 10 fold.
