Recently I have been asked by a few people about yoga teacher training, how I chose my course and how did I know it was right for me. So I thought I would out together a few points for you to consider while taking this big leap of faith in choosing a training course which is right for you.
Find a course which teaches the style you love. For me this was Vinyasa Flow, this was a big must for me and although I did look at other yoga courses such as Hatha based training none of them cried out to me like Vinyasa Flow did. So as I did my research I found that there are not many Vinyasa Flow courses in the UK! You need to love what you are doing in order to fully immerse yourself in the course so make sure the course teaches the right style for you.
Find out about the format of the training. Will there be a huge group of people or will it be more intimate limited to around 10? I encourage you to find this out before you go. I have heard stories of huge teacher trainings with 100s of attendees and no one to one time with the training instructor. If that's what you want then great! If not make sure to find out before placing a deposit on the course.
Teacher training is not a holiday or a retreat. You will work HARD! From early morning until early evening, everything will rotate around yoga so be prepared to work. You will be absorbing so much information, practising, writing, adjusting, practising teaching, expressing, communicating. It can be exhausting but so so rewarding at the same time.
Get to know the teacher before you go. Even if you can't take a class with them do your research. Do you like their style, their tone? Find out if their style of teaching is for you. The internet is so vast nowadays most yogis running teacher trainings have videos and classes online that you can explore.
Dive in 100% with your heart and soul. Teacher trainings can be so transformational. I remember be so so nervous before I went but when it came to leading my very first yoga class although that nervous energy was still there, it felt totally natural to me. You will bond and learn from your fellow teacher trainees. Be present, without distractions.
Develop a strong personal practice. Doing yoga twice a week at the studio is great BUT teacher training is so intense. You will be doing yoga once if not twice daily, as well as everything in between so make sure that your mind and body is prepared for it. After all it won't be much fun if you are too sore to move!
Attending a teacher training can be that very first step into doing what you love as a career so be very clear that the course you chose is for you. Then just go for it!
