I am sure that you have heard about probiotics before, probably from those adverts on TV promoting the 'healthy bacteria' yoghurt drinks, but what are probiotics and should you be taking them? Basically what we all want is to improve our digestion. If you ever suffer from nausea, heartburn, bloating, indigestion, an upset stomach or diarrhoea then you need to have a look at not only what you are eating and what triggers the imbalance, but at a way to restore your gut health back to a healthy balance.
My Digestive Health
I thought that I would tell you a little bit about my own digestive health and my problems just so you know a little bit about what issues I have - maybe you can relate! I can remember having issues with my digestion since my late teenage years, the biggest issue being bloating and then wind caused by that bloating (sorry if TMI!). Back then I think it was probably to do with my diet, I got myself into a bit of a binge/ starve cycle. Rolling forward to more recently again I mostly suffer from bloating and wind related issues. My diet is pretty clean eating (although, lets not talk about the almond croissant I just ate #balance) and I know that my stomach issues are mostly caused by dairy. Needless to say I do avoid dairy as much as I can. However lets be honest here, with macaroni cheese being one of my favourite meals I don't always avoid it as much as I should.
OptiBac Probiotics - What are they + How do they work?
Taking a quality probiotic daily helps to restore balance good flora back into the gut. So what are probiotics exactly I hear you ask? I'll try to keep this simple - OptiBac Probiotics contain 6 different live cultures with FOS fibres and are suitable for everyday use. These strains of healthy bacteria are thought to settle in different parts of the small and large intestine promoting a healthy balance. The FOS fibres are non digestible fibres which 'feed' the healthy bacteria. Sometimes we lose the good bacteria especially if you are on regular medication or antibiotics. The probiotics can help to replace this good bacteria and therefore balance the body.
My Thoughts on OptiBac Probiotics
I have been taking the OptiBac Probiotics for everyday since the end of November and I have noticed a huge difference in my digestion. My stomach feels much more comfortable and at ease, my digestion has also improved. I feel lighter and more energised throughout the day. I still feel bloated and unsettled whenever I eat cheese but I know I have a sensitivity to dairy and I should know better! I switched to a course of the One Week Flat probiotics the week following Christmas, these probiotics are in a powder and you just pop it into a glass of water. It is totally tasteless and easy to drink. I instantly felt better following my over indulgence of chocolate over Christmas.
Other Ways to Naturally Improve Digestion
Alongside probiotics there are a few other things which you can introduce into your diet to improve your digestion.
- Drink hot lemon water daily. I love nothing more than making myself a big steaming mug of hot lemon water and taking it with me to my yoga mat first thing in the morning. Bliss! And a beautiful way to wake up the body.
- Add fermented foods into your diet. Sauerkraut seems to be an in thing right now but I remember loving it as a kid! Kombucha is also a favourite of mine and I always pick some up whenever I am in our local healthy food shop. They contain probiotics and digestive enzymes which help your body to absorb and breakdown the food that you eat.
One final thing you can do is - YOGA! Yes! Your body can't work properly if you are feeling stressed. This 15 Minute Yoga to Ease Bloating + Aid Digestion sequence is perfect to de-stress and get those digestive juices flowing. I was kindly sent the OptiBac Probiotic products for my consideration. As always all thoughts are my own. I only ever work with brands and products which I genuinely love.
