Reflexology is a holistic treatment which I had heard about of course but it never occurred to me to book one for myself. So when I was kindly invited by the Association of Reflexologists to have a reflexology treatment I was rather intrigued by the prospect. As a yoga teacher I am always on the go but I think it is so important to take time out for yourself as well so I looked forward to the appointment.
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a holistic therapy based on the principle that there are areas and points on the feet, hands and ears which map the nervous system and correspond to different areas of the body. Reflexology aims to restore a balanced flow of energy to all parts of the body through gentle massage of the energy points on the feet. Promoting greater health, vitality and well-being.
I had arranged for the treatment to take place in my house, mainly because I get anxious when I have to drive to places that I don't know so I thought that by having the appointment at my home I would feel much more at ease. I was greeted by Kate from Lotus Reflexology who instantly made me feel comfortable with her friendly, calm nature. She began by asking me questions about my health and lifestyle including past exercise and nutrition. She explained the reflexology therapy to me and made sure that I knew everything that I needed to know before we started.
Kate started to work on my feet by applying pressure to my feet, she worked thoroughly and mindfully. We chatted throughout the majority of my treatment apart from the final few minutes where I drifted into an almost meditative state. Kate picked up on the fact that I had injured my back a couple of weeks before which I thought was amazing as I had forgotten to mention it.
Everyone has different experiences from reflexology as it depends on what is going on in your own body. Afterwards I found that I felt like I was floating around for a few hours and I was extremely thirsty. Kate had explained that I should make sure to drink lots of water afterwards and my body was certainly telling me to do just that!
The Benefits of Reflexology
A reflexology treatment or course or treatments can help to reduce anxiety and stress, restore balance, eliminate toxins, help relieve sleep disorders and ease digestive issues. As everyone is an individual reflexology helps different people in different ways. Reflexologists are there to support you as a whole person and promote your well-being.
Where to find out more
The Association of Reflexologists has an excellent website where you can look at in depth, interactive foot and hand maps and videos should you wish to find out more. They also have a 'find a reflexologist' service where you can simply pop in your postcode to find a well trained and fully insured reflexologist in your area. If you are in the Bristol area I highly recommend checking out Kate of Lotus Reflexology, who is not only lovely but very professional and experienced.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary reflexology treatment for the purpose of this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and I only ever work with brands and products I genuinely love.
