Last month during December I was feeling stress out and frazzled. I know what you are thinking - 'you teach yoga for a living so you must be totally zen all the time, you can't be stressed right?' - Wrong. Even though on the outside I might be calm and put together - I'm only human, I'm running a business which involves classes, retreats, workshops, blogging, I'm self employed and just like you I need to pay the bills! So yes, sometimes stress does creep in. So I thought that I would share three ways to relax and de-stress which I have implemented into my life that have really helped.
3 Ways to Relax and De-Stress
1. Have a look at your work schedule. If you feel like you are always running around from place to place or thing to thing (or in my case, class to class) then see what you can cut out. Do you need to be running around trying to get everything done? If you work in an office environment can you delegate? If you work for yourself figure out what isn't serving you and let it go. In my case I had been leading a lot of classes (10 plus per week), did I need to be doing all of this? No. So I cut out the classes I had offered to cover (there is always another yoga instructor grateful of the extra class) and went back to focusing on my regular timetable. The result was a felt a renewed sense of joy when I led a class, I came up with new sequencing and I could connect to the students with all of my attention.
2. Find space for yourself. For me this was taking the time in the evening to soak my tired muscles in an epsom salt bath. This way both my body and my mind could unwind and it set me up of a good nights sleep. I always find that I suffer with insomnia when I am stressed out because my mind is constantly whirring.
3. Use aromatherapy. I picked up a Sweet Dreams roller ball by Tisserand from my local Boots store. It contains lavender, sandalwood and jasmine with lavender being the most prominent scent. I glide the roller ball on my pulse points - wrists, temples and neck - to release the natural blend of oils. It really does help me drift off to sleep faster.
